The Report on the New Academic Structure for Senior Secondary Education and Higher Education ¡V Actions for Investing in the Future¡¦ (EDB, May 2005) has announced the implementation of the new academic structure for secondary schools in the 2009/10 school year. Liberal Studies (LS) will be a core subject for the New Senior Secondary (NSS) curriculum. LS curriculum comprises three Areas of Study and ¡¥Science, Technology & the Environment¡¦ is one of the three. LS curriculum adopts issue-enquiry approach and teaching of LS is structured around enquiry into a range of issues. Amongst the issues, socio-scientific issues related to ¡¥Science, Technology & the Environment¡¦ require scientific knowledge for argumentation and informed decision making. In response to this curriculum change, a group of members have a series of meetings between February to June 2009 to:
¡@
study the science and mathematics elements in NSS LS curriculum;
explore the opportunities and challenges to the Association brought by this curriculum change; and
discuss the possible ways for enriching the professional development of members who will teach LS in the coming years.
Amongst the number of attendance, there is wide agreement that NSS LS curriculum can provide all students with opportunities to know more about science in order to engage with issues and decisions that arise in everyday life. In order to collect information about members¡¦ needs, we sent all the members a simple survey regarding LS and we received 31 members showing their interests and concerns on this subject. Thus we decided to set up LS subject committee and a workshop was organized to explore ¡¥Learning & Teaching Strategies on Public Health of NSS Liberal Studies¡¦ in June 2009.
