The Council

The Council is the main executive body of the Association that handles central matters. Most of the work is handled via our Office secretary and vice-secretary. Other than administrative work, the Council members has no hesitation in promoting Science and Maths Education by

Biology

The team comprises of many enthusiastic frontline teachers and curriculum developers. Throughout these years, it has been heavily involved in reviewing Syllabuses at all levels from S4 to S7. Many have also helped in collating and developing different teaching and learning strategies throughout the years. Seminars and workshops are held throughout the year to promote such new or innovative strategies. Some of the highlights in the past years are teaching strategies at various level with IT-enrichment (web-based, CD-ROM, etc.) and one specific area of concern is ecology. As TAS has been introduced recently at AL, workshops are held for new biology teachers occasionally.

Many have also helped in collating and developing different teaching and learning strategies throughout the years.

Seminars and workshops are held throughout the year to promote such new or innovative strategies. Some of the highlights in the past years are projects developed for teaching and learning at various level with IT-enrichment (web-based, CD-ROM, VCD, etc¡K), the Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for secondary schools (HKChO, as a co-organizer), Green Chemistry (through the promotion of microscale chemistry), fun in chemistry, book reviews.

Integrated Science Committee (IS)

As the subject IS is different in different school, the co-ordination work of such is quite difficult. The difference lies between a formal curriculum with the CDC Syllabus as blueprint to adoption of a tailored syllabus by the school herself, for example, a two-year IS curriculum in S1-S2 but disseminated into Physics/Chemistry/Biology in S3. As for teachers, though most school has her IS co-ordinator, teachers handling the instruction may come from different discipline (ranging from maths to technology).

In spite of the difficulty, the IS committee has tried to collection and disseminate resources and ideas for the teaching of Integrated Science through newsletter and various workshops or seminars. Also, as the New IS Syllabus will be implemented this year (2000-01), the CDI and textbook publishers have arranged different sorts of seminars and workshops (including IT-enriched) for the teachers. Our members have helped in many of such seminars and workshops throughout the year. We hope the change of focus in the New IS Curriculum (more investigative than content-based) will bring new insights to all Secondary school teachers and students as a good start (from S1) is half-success.

We look forward to more input from YOU, your bright ideas!

Physics

The team comprises of many enthusiastic and experienced teachers and professors. Throughout these years, it has been heavily involved in reviewing Syllabuses at all levels from S4 to S7. Many have also helped in collating and developing different teaching and learning strategies throughout the years. Seminars and workshops are held throughout the year to promote such new or innovative strategies. Some of the highlights in the past years are teaching strategies at various level with IT-enrichment (web-based, CD-ROM, etc.) and one specific areas of concern are the use of toys in physics teaching and learning. TAS at AL are to be introduced shortly, and so workshops are to be held for teachers occasonally. Other routine activities are exchange of examination papers and sale of equipments.

General Studies (Primary Science)

The situation with primary science is ever more difficult. This is because the Primary Science has been integrated with Health and Social Studies forming the new subject General Studies (G.S.) for years. That is, there is no specific identity of Science in the Primary Curriculum. Also, as the G.S. is an integrated subject, teachers handling the subject comes from different discipline, some are not even science/technology-based.
In spite of the difficult situation, the IS committee has tried to collection and disseminate resources and ideas for the teaching of Integrated Science through newsletter and various workshops or seminars. Our members have helped in many of such seminars and workshops throughout the year.
