PAST Activities


The Hong Kong Biology Olympiad 

is now open for application

 

The Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education (HKASME) is working with the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) of the Education University of Hong Kong this year, to hold the Hong Kong Biology Olympiad (HKBO) for Secondary Schools.  We are glad to announce that a new challenge of practical work will be added to the HKBO, in order to involve students in a challenging and interesting biology competition.  Details of the competition are as follow:

 

Format

The competition consists of two parts:

 

(a)

First Round: Written Test

   
  • To be held on 19th November, 2016 (Saturday),
  • First session: 09:00 a.m. -10:00 a.m.
  • Second session: 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • Third session: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.(Provisional)
   
  • Each participant attends a 1-hour test with 60 multiple-choice questions and completes the assessment INDIVIDUALLY.
   
  • The test consists of questions related to four areas in Biology:
   
  1. scientific inquiry (20%),
  2. nature of science (20%),
  3. science, technology, social & environment connection (20%), and
  4. content knowledge (40%).
   
  • Questions are set referring to the COMMON parts shared by HKDSE Biology and HKDSE Combined Science (Biology).
   
  • Questions are set in both Chinese and English versions.
     
 

(b)

Second Round: Practical Test

   
  • To be held on 17th December, 2016 (Saturday)
   
  • 20 teams from Schools with the highest average scores from First Round can participate in the Second Round.
   
  • Each team should finish a practical task with the materials provided by the SES, HKEdU.
     

Rules

  • Students should be nominated by school.
  • Students should be enrolled in team of four.
  • Only students of S4/S5/S6 in the school year 2016-2017 may participate.   
  • HKASME reserves the rights for any amendments made.

Awards

  • Individual Awards of the First Round include First, Second, Third Class as well as Merit Awards.
  • Team Awards of the First Round will be awarded to the schools (with at least 10 students participating) with the mean test scores of their top 10 students ranked in the top eight among all participating schools in the first Round.
  • Team Awards of the Second Round include First, Second, and Third Class Awards.
  • Team Awards of First, Second, and Third Class would be awarded according to the overall results of the two rounds of competitions.
  • School with the highest number of participants will be awarded with Certification of High Participation.

Late January, 2017

   

Fee

HK$60 per student (Include administration, marking, analysis report and certificates)
