    - AGM and Forum : the chairman's report

    CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr C.K. OR Council Chairman 1999-2000
Thanks! We have done a good job!
I would like to begin my report by thanking colleagues who have made the past year another success for the HKASME. Through the collaboration and devotion of member teachers in the Council and the 6 Subject Sub-committees, the Association was able to provide over 40 different events for teachers to profess in the field of school science and mathematics education. (Please refer to the summary tables for details.) The programmes, whether in forms of seminars, workshops or visits, were designed with a wide range of themes to cater for the needs of both new and experienced teachers. It was common to see that many of these PD programmes were organized in conjunction with other local professional educational organizations.

    Some highlights are:

    • Chemistry Olympiad for Schools (with HK Chemistry Society, ED, RSC)
    • Fun in Science Competition 2000: Egg Drop Contest (with Society of HK Scholars)
    • The HK Mathematical High Achievers Selection Contest (with Po Leung Kuk)
    • Math Trail 2000 (with HK Institute of Education)
    • Science and Technology Education Conference, STEC2000 (with CDI, HKIEd)
Members in the Council and the different Subject Sub-committees continued to contribute professionally in leading progressive development in various aspects in education. The Association has representatives in the CDC Committees for Key Learning Areas (KLA) in Science and Mathematics Education, and the Advisory Management Committee of the HK Teachers' Centre. We also have members serving the subject committees of HKEA and various ah-hoc groups of CDC.

This year, membership of the Association has gone up to over 700, with about 80% being renewed members. The figure shows that teachers by and large have found it useful and rewarding by becoming members of the HKASME.

Yet we would like to do more than that!
As a non-governmental and voluntary professional organization, it is definitely incredible for the Association to be able to come up with such wonderful programmes for teachers to enhance their continual professional development in science and mathematics education. However, it seems that with the switching emphasis of government to give more support for schools and the call for life-long learning as advocated by the Education Commission in the recent round of educational reform, whether the Association could and should still maintain such important role for teachers is much doubtful. Even if the answer is yes, how the Association could move ahead for such goal is yet to explore.

What we would like to do¡K¡K
In this circumstance and for the years to come, the Council would like to set the following as priority areas that lead the development of the Association:

    1. Re-shaping directions as what and how the Association would envision science and mathematics education be advanced and promoted, in the 21st century
    2. Raising the profile of the Association to the education community and the general public
    3. Enhancing communication with and among members
    4. Identifying and collating strengths as what our members are and what they are doing in promoting science and mathematics education
    5. Collating and extending good practices in science and mathematics education
    6. Strengthening links and establishing collaboration with local and international communities in science and mathematics education
    7. Collaborating with commerce and industries
    8. Securing sufficient financial support
    What we need¡K
Financial resources are important. But the more crucial element is support from concerned members - YOU!

We need YOU as new blood to help organize various PD programmes.
We also need YOU as concerned member to advise what the Association should and could do that could prepare teachers to organize and enjoy meaningful teaching in science and mathematics.

Last but not the least, the Council must take this opportunity to thank our President, Dr Q.W. LEE, our Hon. Legal Advisor, Mr Lester Huang and our Hon. Auditor, Mr Alex Wu for their invaluable advice and support in the last year.
