2002:August to Dec 2002   ........  
(1) Council decided to upgrade our service via the web message, especially for urgent news that the Newsletter can't catch up.
(2) Council has met with HKEAA from Oct to Dec 2002 to gain understanding and co-operate in organising the ANNUAL "Assessment Review" Event. The event had been held successfully at IMSC, HK Island on 7-Dec 2002. More orders of different kinds of resources for ALL teachers as OUR CURRICULUM is changing (Science & Maths, from P1 to S4-5)... SOme presentation materials had been uploaded to our site for teachers' reference.

(3) Unluckily, the August New Teachers' Orientation is not so successful as the number of applicants do not meet the Organiser's requirement (above 4 per group). The Council may decide to organise her own program with new teachers (including those new to the profession, not just the in-experienced).
(4) More co-operation with outside bodies, e.g. supporting the "Body Exhibition", a worldwide exhibition attracting many participants round the world with controversies everywhere as they use REAL HUMAN BODIES (treated with advanced technology -- "plastiscised").

• Jan:  Membership card issued with Newsletter for "Jan+Feb"

• 12 Jan:  council representatives invited to give views on theNew CE Subject "Science & Technology" (to be implemented by 2003 andfirst examined 2005).     Interested memberscould send emails to the office for more details..........  (note:our chairman is one of the members of the working party on the subject)
• 18 Jan:   Council Meeting -- settling office matters and invitesuggestions for the coming AGM and participating mode in the June STECat the HKied.
• 26 Jan:  Fun Science!  (智擒北斗)  at Science Museum
• Jan:  Winner of HKChO (2000-01) went to China participating the China'sChemistry Olympiad (the selection competition for the International round).... see report in coming Newsletter
• 2 Feb:  Exhibition at Teachers' Centre and Seminars
• Feb: Biology seminar at Ng Yuk Sec Sch.
• 8 March:  Due date of HKChOProjects (Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for SecondarySchool)
• 16 March:  "Maths &Science Trail"   at CUHK   ---the first round substituting our usual annual "Maths Trail" .......... application document & details will be sent to school .... or clickhere... The1st Maths & Science Trail at CUHK on 16-Mar (SAT)

2001: Sep to Dec 

• The Council has come up with consensus of the Subject Committees to hosta co-ordinated Forum with CE/AL Paper Reviews at the same occasion (re:Council Meeting on 9/11/2001).   This is a feedback to the currentdiscussion about the "washback effect of assessment". And, the Policy Draftersare keen in making "Assessment for Learning" as a hot issue in the comingyear!     The above activity was successfully runat Ng Yuk Sec. School on 8/12/2001 with 2 main parts:
 
(A) Main Conference in the Hall with guest keynote speech sharingviews of "how assessment affect our teaching and learning in the comingyears"   from the CDI and HKEA officials.  They includethe Maths CDI official (Mr. Kwan SK),  Science CDI official (Mr. LeungSK) and Secretary of the HKEA  (Mr. Choi CC) .    The main messages delivered focussed on the all-round with open and flexiblecurriculum versus the limitation of our public examinations as an assessmenttool.    Whether "assessment of learning" or "assessmentfor learning" is the priority depends on our teaching profession. Main sharing questionsraised by Council, see document ......

          About 200 teachersparticipated in this session.    Discussion with the floorwas well-received.

(B) Parallel Subject Sessions -- mainly paper review of 2001 withdiscussion about the trend of asessment in various subjects.    Some subject groups had hot debate about the way of introducing new typesof questions and forms of assessment led to late closure (until about 1:30pm) of the event which aimed at 12:00.

• Also, the list of routine activities are as previous years with more issuesthan those before. They include the "Fun in Science", "Chemistry Olympiadfor Sec. 2001: Jan to May

Our chairman, with council members and some enthusiastic members meetdifferent government officials -- the Secretary of EC, the Heads of ED,Head of CDC, and the new Chairman of EC.

Discussions deals mainly withthe "professional ladder"  (continual professional growth,  CPD) and various channels in partnership efforts with different professionalbodies.   Supports are claimed to be underway.

This is particular importantas the NEW curricula for S4-S5 (Phy, Chm, Bio) are undergoing consultationfrom May to June.  Many of our members are working under the CDC Adhocgroups.  What's your view?
